Humane Education…
Old Fella has a vibrant humane education program committed to providing quality character education to the children in Burke County, Georgia in both the public and private school systems. Georgia law mandates comprehensive character education. Kindness and compassion are two of the character traits identified in the state character education curriculum. Kindness and compassion are what Old Fella’s Kids are all about.
Since 2008, The Old Fella Humane Education Team have presented to over 2,000 fourth grade students and 60 adults in Burke County. Their presentations include topics on being kind and compassionate to animals, being a responsible pet owner, proper care and treatment of your pet and why spaying and neutering are important.
Old Fella’s Kids learn so much more than just about caring for cats and dogs. A few of the benefits of humane education are:
- Builds Moral Character. Helps our kids develop compassion, empathy and ethics and, most importantly, it reinforces the Golden Rule.
- Creates Responsible and Caring Citizens. Helps our kids examine and understand the consequences of their behaviors and choices through discussions of proper and improper treatment of pets.
- Reduces Violence. Children who display violence to animals often go on to engage in violent acts toward their peers and sometimes even carry these behaviors into adulthood.
- Cultivates Empathy for Animals. Helps children understand that animals are living, feeling beings that deserve to be treated with respect and compassion.
- Empowers Youth to Make a Difference. Helps children develop a sense of control within their environment and learn ways in which they can help solve problems rather than to create them.
Old Fella needs desperately needs volunteers for this program. Presentations are typically during school hours and can vary from several hours one day per week to several hours 2 or 3 times per month.
